Matilda Genevieve Scaduto (Felice) was born on August 7, 1925 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin into an Italian family of music lovers. Although she had no musical training, she and her entire family sang and played instruments by ear. As a child she began composing lyrics set to traditional Italian tunes, and in her teens sang in and directed shows at the local United Service Organizations. In early 1945, Matilda, an elevator operator struck up a conversation with a visiting musician from Georgia named Boudleaux Bryant, who was touring with a pop music combo in Milwaukee. After a three-week whirlwind courtship, they eloped and married that fall. In the early years of their marriage, the Bryant's traveled around the country ...
